What is Speciality Coffee
Specialty coffee refers to the whole process from farmer to cup using a single origin coffee. It refers to the way the coffee is roasted and how it is extracted. According to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), specialty coffee is scored 80 or above on a 100 point scale for aroma/fragrance, flavour, aftertaste, acidity, body, uniformity, balance, sweetness, clean cup, overall, and especially, with no coffee defects. But what does the consumer understand about this? Sometimes people say that to have the best coffee, the consumer should have the best cup experience. For Lupo Lab, specialty coffee doesn’t just mean sourcing the best coffee from around the world but also the best experience possible from these beans to people. Specialty comes from a long path and in coffee, it is a complicated chain. To make the perfect experience, all the different links along the chain must work perfectly together.
Sustainability and direct trade are nothing without good roasting, great extraction and awesome service. We truly believe in direct trade and are happy to support the farmer, paying them a direct and fair price for their product, motivating them to improve their processes to give them a future and give us the best product possible.
It is really common now to question whether specialty coffee is dead. It is now easier ever to decide to become a coffee roaster or start a coffee business and hide behind the specialty coffee banner. We believe specialty coffee is alive and real. Unfortunately, like in all industries, there is always the risk of the wrong use of the words and misleading marketing.
